Undergraduate : MBBS Degree

Course Description

Every student shall undergo a period of certified study extending over 4½ academic years followed by one year compulsory rotating Internship.  The 4½ years course has been divided into three phases.

  1. Phase- I – 1 year, consisting of two terms of 6 months each
  2. Phase II – 1 ½ years, consisting of three terms 6 months each
  3. Phase III –  3 ½ years, after Phase I, consisting of 7 terms

Eligibility

A candidate seeking admission to first MBBS course:

  1. Shall have passed two year Pre University examination conducted by Department of Pre-University Education, Karnataka State, with English as one of the subjects and Physics, Chemistry and Biology as optional Subjects. The candidate shall have passed subjects of English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology individually also.

  1. Shall have passed any other examination conducted by Boards / Councils / Intermediate examination established by State Governments/ Central Government and recognized as equivalent to two year Pre University examination by the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences / Association of Indian Universities (AIU), with English as one of the subjects and Physics, Chemistry and Biology as optional subjects and the candidate shall have passed subjects of English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology individually.

  1. Shall have passed Intermediate examination in Science of an India University/Board/Council or other recognized examining bodies with physics, Chemistry and Biology, which shall include a practical test in these subjects and also English as compulsory subject. The candidate shall have passed subjects of English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology individually.

  1. Shall have passed first year of the three year degree course of a recognized University with Physics, Chemistry and Biology including a practical test in these subjects provided the examination is an “University Examination” provided that the candidate shall have passed subjects of English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology individually in the pre university or other examinations mentioned in the clauses above.

  1. Shall have passed B.Sc. Examination of an Indian University, provided that he/she has passed the B.Sc. examination with not less than two of the following subjects: Physics, Chemistry, Biology (Botany, Zoology) provided the candidate has passed subjects of English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology individually in the qualifying examinations mentioned in clauses (i) (ii) and (iii)

Candidates who have passed “Physical Science” instead of Physics and Chemistry as two separate subjects are not eligible for admission to MBBS course as per Medical Council of India Regulations vide letter MCI-37 (2)/2001/Med.922 dated 14-02-2001 and RGUHS letter UA/ELY-115/1998-2000 dated 22-05-2001.

Marks

The selection of students to medical colleges shall be based on merit provided that:

  1. In case of admission on the  basis of qualifying examination, a candidate for admission to MBBS course must have passed individually in the subjects of Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English and must have obtained not less than 50% marks taken together in Physics, Chemistry and Biology in the qualifying examination.  In respect of candidates belonging to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes or Category I, the marks obtained in Physics, Chemistry and Biology taken together in qualifying examination is not less than 40% instead of 50% as above.
  2. In case of admission on the basis of competitive entrance examination, a candidate must have passed individually in the subjects of Physics, Chemistry and Biology and English and must have obtained not less than 50% marks in Physics, Chemistry and Biology taken together at the qualifying examination and in addition must have come in the merit list prepared as a result of such competitive entrance examination by securing not less than 50% marks in Physics, Chemistry and Biology taken together in the competitive examination. In respect of candidates belonging to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes or Category I, the marks obtained I Physics, Chemistry and Biology taken together I qualifying examination and competitive entrance examination be not less than 40% instead 50% as stated above. (vide amendment to MCI Regulations, 1997, notified in Gazette of Government of India dated 29-05-1999).

The candidates should have completed 17 years of age on or before 31st day of December of the year of admission

Attendance, Progress and Conduct:

  1. A Candidate pursuing MD/MS/Diploma course will be covered under code of medical ethics
  2. A candidate pursuing degree/diploma course should work in the concerned department of the institution for the full period as a full-time student. No candidate is permitted to run a clinic/laboratory/nursing home while studying postgraduate course.
  3. Each year shall be taken as a unit for the purpose of calculating attendance.
  4. Every student shall attend symposia, seminars, conferences, journal review meetings, grand rounds, CPC, case presentation, clinic and lectures during each year as prescribed by the department and not absent himself/herself from work without valid reason.
  5. Every candidate is required to attend a minimum of 80% of the training during each academic year of the post graduate course. Privided further, leave of any kind shall not be counted as part of academic term without prejudice to minimum 80% attendance of training period every year.
  6. Any student who fails to complete the course in the manner stated above shall not be permitted to appear for the University Examination.

Schedule of Examination:

The examination for MD/MS courses shall be held at the end of three academic years (six academic terms).  The examination for the diploma courses shall be held at the end of two academic years (four academic terms).  The university shall conduct two examinations in a year at an interval of four to six months between the two examinations.  Nor more than two examinations shall be conducted in an academic year. Scheme of Examination:

  1. MD/MS Degree: MD/MS Degree examinations in any subject shall consist of dissertation, written paper (Theory), Practical/Clinical and Viva-voce.
  2. Written Examination (Theory):  A written examination shall consist of four question papers, each of three hours duration.  Each paper shall carry 100 marks.
  3. Practical/Clinical Examination: In case of practical examination, it should be aimed at assessing competence and skills of techniques and procedures as well as testing students ability to make relevant and valid observations, interpretations and  inference of laboratory or experimental work relating to his/her subject. The total marks for practical/ clinical examination shall 200.
  4. Viva Voice: Viva Voce Examination shall aim at assessing depth of knowledge, logical reasoning, confidence and oral communication skills.  The total marks are 100.
  5. Criteria for declaring as pass in University Examination: 50% marks in each head of passing which shall include (1) Theory, (2) Practical including clinical and viva-voce examination.

Diploma Examination:  

Diploma examination in any subject shall consist of theory (written papers), Practical/Clinical and Viva-voce.

  1. Theory:  There shall be three written question papers each carrying 100 marks.  Each paper will be of three hours duration.
  2. Practical/Clinical Examination: In case of practical examination is should be aimed at assessing competence, skills related to laboratory procedures as well as testing students ability to make relevant and valid observation, interpretation of laboratory or experimental work relevant to his/her subject.
  3. Viva-Voce Examination: The total marks are 50.
  4. Criteria for Pass: 50% marks in each head of passing which shall include (1) Theory, (2) Practical including clinical and viva-voce examination.

In case of clinical examination, it should aim at examining clinical skills and competence of candidate for undertaking independent work as a specialist.  Each candidate should examine at least one long case and two short cases.

The maximum marks for practical/clinical shall be 150.

Eligibility:

MD/MS Degree and Diploma Courses: A candidate affiliated to this institute and who has passed final year MBBS examination after pursing a study in a medical college recognized by the Medical Council of India, from a recognized Medical College affiliated to any other University recognized as equivalent thereto, and has completed one year compulsory rotating internship in a teaching Institution or other Institution recognized by the Medical Council of India, and has obtained permanent registration of any State Medical Council shall be eligible for admission. Obtaining Eligibility Certificate by the University before Making Admission:

No candidate shall be admitted for any postgraduate degree/diploma course unless the candidate has obtained and produced the eligibility certificate issued by the University.

The candidate has to make an application to the University with the following documents along with the prescribed fee:

  1. MBBS pass/degree certificate issued by the University.
  2. Marks cards of all the university examinations passed MBBS course.
  3. Attempt Certificate issued by the Principal.
  4. Certificate regarding the recognition of the medical college by the Medical Council of India.
  5. Completion of internship certificate.
  6. In case the internship was done in a non-teaching hospital, a certificate from the Medical Council of India that the hospital has been recognized for internship.
  7. Registration by any State Medical Council and
  8. Proof of SC/ST or Category I, as the case may be.

Candidates should obtain the Eligibility Certificate before the last date for admission as notified by the University.
