Wenzhou Medical University designated as a key university in Wenzhou, Zhejiang, is an institution of higher learning under the leadership of Zhejiang Provincial Government. Zhejiang Specialized Medical School established in Hangzhou in 1912, named Zhejiang Second Medical College at that time. In August 1958, part of Zhejiang Medical College was moved from Hangzhou to Wenzhou and began recruiting 5-year fulltime program students, hence the name Wenzhou Medical College. In 2013, the Chinese Ministry of Higher Education china upgraded WMC’s status to that of a medical university; it has thus been renamed the Wenzhou Medical University. WMU is composed of three campuses, located respectively at Chashan, Xueyuan Road and Xiushan. Chashan is the main campus of WMU. These covering an area of about 800,000 ㎡ with a floor space of 500,000㎡. WMU have 9 Affiliated Hospital.

Wenzhou Medical College under the auspices of the School of International Studies runs the International Medical School program. Wenzhou Medical College obtained the qualification of recruiting overseas students in 1993. Wenzhou Medical University is one of 30 first most universities authorized by China’s Ministry of Education to recruit international students for English taught MBBS program and the academic degree is recognized by the World Health Organization. Wenzhou Medical University, is actively recruiting International students for MBBS and BDS undergraduate programs and WMC is one of China’s first most Medical College enrolling students for BDS program. Since the inception of the English-Medium Medical programs in China, a new school was added to the WMC – the School of International Studies which has a unique character required to match the unique task of training international students as future medical doctors as stipulated by the Ministry of Education. It is charged with running the International Medical School (IMS) and the Confucius Center at Burapha University (Thailand). Currently the student body consists of over 400 students, with a diversity comprising more than 40 nationalities.
In April 2006, the School of International Studies of Wenzhou medical College was founded, starting to recruit overseas medical students. Now it is one of the biggest educational institutes for overseas students in Zhejiang Province. WMC has a present enrollment of over 14000 full time students with more than 2000 post-graduates. According to statistics of National Medical Licensing Examination results, the results of Wenzhou Medical University graduates remain ranked in top 10 in the country with more than one hundred medical colleges and universities. Since the inception of the English-Medium Medical programs in China, a new school was added to the WMC – the School of International Studies which has a unique character required to match the unique task of training international students as future medical doctors as stipulated by the Ministry of Education. It is charged with running the International Medical School (IMS) and the Confucius Center at Burapha University (Thailand). Currently the student body consists of over 400 students, with a diversity comprising more than 40 nationalities. WMC now offers 3 doctorate programs, 27 master programs, 26 bachelor programs and 1 7-year program leading to Master’s degree, involving medicine, science, administration, laws, engineering, arts and education. Outstanding College undergraduates are entitled exam free entrance to postgraduate courses on recommendation. WMC has over 8500 professional academic staff out of which 1300 holds senior professional technical positions. WMC holds approval and nomination authority for one professorship and 10 associate professorships in first class disciplines.
The International Medical School is administratively based at the Chashan campus, located in the University Town. Student instruction is also carried out at the Chashan campus for the students’ preliminary 3 years. In the course of the fourth year, the students are moved to the “Old Campus” at Xuéyuàn Lù, which is in the vicinity of the school’s various affiliated teaching hospitals.
