PG Medical Admission

PG Medical Entrance Exam

PG Medical: Admission to postgraduate courses after MBBS in India is a nightmare. Getting admission through the highly competitive entrance exam for PG, NEET, to admit to the program for postgraduate in medicine is an extremely difficult situation for Indian doctors. With the falling demand of general physicians at MBBS level as compared to the doctors with a post-graduate degree in India who is perceived as specialized health professional. Almost every doctor wishes to specialize in some area such as Radiologist, Neurologist, Cardiologist or MD in Internal medicine, Immunology etc. through PG medical entrance exams. MDMSenquiry, as a reputed overseas education consultant in Mumbai provides a clear roadmap to Medical PG in Abroad to counter the challenge posed due to PG medical entrance exam .

STATISTICS OF ASPIRANTS Vs. PG MEDICAL SEATS

The number of government seats in the postgraduate institute of medicine for the doctors is a handful for each of the specializations and the topmost students only are able to get their desired seats in postgraduate medicine. The total number of seats in government medical colleges for postgraduate in medicine is only 6,000 out of which 50% are in the reserved category. The number of MBBS pass outs every year is around 35,000 from India while the number of students trying for postgraduate medical programs and giving all India medical PG entrance exams commonly called NEET PG have risen from 64,000 in 2011 to 100,000 in 2015. This means only 3% of the aspirant get their PG medical seats in government colleges. This 3% is also divided into around 48 specializations for postgraduate courses in India meaning, most of the students do not get their chosen specialization and agree to compromise and take whatever seat is being offered to them from the large list of post-graduation courses in India as per the availability! MDMSenquiry has designed and successfully implemented a roadmap to Medical PG in India and Abroad for many doctors.

THE NEXT OPTION – PRIVATE MEDICAL COLLEGES

Why then, every doctor tries to give post-graduation entrance exam for medical in India? In this competitive route of NEET PG entrance exam, the next level of problem is created due to the other 6,000 seats available are private medical seats, most of which are with huge capitation fees. There are not many other PG entrance exams in India except for the private medical colleges who generally offer limited number of seats on merit through NEET PG exam. Initially, getting the admission to MBBS itself was so difficult and now that you completed MBBS, it is even further difficult to crack medical PG exams in India. What could be your next step to be a medical postgraduate if you did not get the precious medical seat through all India NEET PG entrance exam?

The management and NRI quota of the private medical seats is generally offered with the capitation fees starting from Rs. 1.25 Crore right up to Rs. 4.50 Crore for Radiology in south Indian medical colleges. In some of the PG medicine courses such as PG in emergency medicine or internal medicine may be slightly lower in comparison to more famous ones such as Radiology. In general, it is restricted only to the super-rich people who can afford the same. So there are few options for the doctors in case they could not get admission to PG courses in medicine through PG medical entrance exams in India, NEET PG or arrange for the capitation fees for the private medical colleges?

SURVEY WITH DOCTORS IN MUMBAI CITY:

When we conducted a small survey limited to Mumbai city within 200 postgraduate in medicine aspiration, we shockingly found out that on average, every doctor had already appeared for all India PG medical entrance exam 2 times. When the results of the survey were analyzed further, we understood that the doctors from private colleges appearing for NEET PG entrance exams were their 4th attempt on average! The survey sample of doctors appearing for P.G medical exams in India was very limited in nature but it surely leads to a conclusion that the quality of doctors from the private medical colleges was lower than the government medical colleges and probably, the doctors had taken the admission at MBBS level by paying donation instead of entering on merit and accordingly, did not stand a chance via NEET PG entrance exam in India.

Few of the different specializations to pursue post-graduation in medicine through all India PG exam by various postgraduate medical institutes are as below:

AVERAGE AGE OF MD IN INDIA

The average age of a doctor who passed NEET PG exam in India holding an MD or MS degree is 31 years. Generally, a student passes the bachelor level exam of medicine to get MBBS degree by the age of 24 years. The post-graduate medical program is further for 3 years. Ideally, the age of a medicine postgraduate should be 27 years. It is time to settle down in personal life and still many of the doctors are struggling and frustrated with their academic achievements post-graduate after MBBS due to non-clearance of post graduate medical entrance exam.  It becomes difficult to pursue the dream of post graduation in medicine with mounting pressure especially when you are already working in a hospital with a busy life and fighting against all odds to study within a limited time for the next attempt of your post-graduation entrance exam for medical. However, in India it is either PG entrance exam or high capitation fees.

Looking at the above scenario, nowadays the doctors have understood the entire problem of admission through medicine PG entrance exams quite well and many of them are taking an alternative route such as an overseas PG medical program while already planning to give post graduation medical exam. Most of the programs abroad do not offer this challenge of PG medical entrance exam (except USA). This creates a fantastic option for them in case they failed to crack the PG entrance exams for government medical seats or other NEET PG exams conducted by the private medical colleges. Generally the expenses for this overseas medical PG are unbelievably lower than the Indian ones such as ranging from Rs. 20 Lacs to Rs. 50 Lacs depending on the selection of country.
