The updated seat matrix is based on data available as of September 1, 2026, and was issued through NMC Letter No. U-15029/09/2025-UGMEB, dated September 10, 2026. According to the NMC data:
- 836 medical colleges are included.
- 445 government colleges offer 63,971 MBBS seats.
- 391 private colleges offer 76,243 MBBS seats.
- The total approved MBBS intake is 1,40,214 seats.
- Institutes of National Importance are not included in this matrix.
The revised seat position incorporates approvals granted by the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB), the First Appeal Committee of NMC and the Second Appeal Committee of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
Why the Updated Seat Matrix Matters
The NMC seat matrix will be used by the MCC and State counselling authorities while conducting NEET UG 2026 MBBS admissions. Candidates can use the updated intake figures to understand the number of approved seats available for All India Quota and State counselling.
Medical colleges must ensure that admissions are made only against the approved seats mentioned in the latest NMC notification.
NMC Instructions for Medical Colleges
The NMC has issued the following directions to medical institutions:
- Private colleges granted permission for a new college or increased intake must submit the required Electronic Bank Guarantee within seven days of the notice.
- The Electronic Bank Guarantee must be submitted in favour of the Director, MARB.
- The Letter of Permission will be issued only after verification of the bank guarantee.
- Colleges must report any discrepancy in their listed seat data to the President or Director, MARB.
- The seat matrix may be revised after further decisions by the Appeal Committees or another competent authority.
- Counselling committees must not allow admission beyond the approved number of seats.
Compliance Warning
The NMC has warned medical colleges against admitting students beyond the approved intake capacity.
Any admission granted over and above the notified seats may be treated as a violation of the National Medical Commission Act, 2019. Such violations may invite regulatory and penal action against the concerned college or institution.
Information Shared with Counselling Authorities
The updated MBBS seat matrix has been forwarded to:
- Departments of Medical Education in all States and Union Territories.
- Medical Counselling Committee, DGHS.
- Concerned medical colleges and institutions.
- Other authorities involved in NEET UG 2026 counselling.
The matrix will be considered during the ongoing Central and State NEET UG counselling process.
