Banaras Hindu University History & Legacy

BHU was established in 1916 as a residential university, making it one of the oldest and largest universities in Asia. It was envisioned by Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya as a institution that would blend modern education with Indian cultural values. The university’s prominent landmarks include:

  • Bharat Kala Bhavan: An art and archaeological museum established in 1920, with Rabindranath Tagore as its first chairman.
  • Sir Sunderlal Hospital: Established in 1926 with 96 beds, now expanded to over 900 beds, serving as the largest tertiary referral hospital in the region.
